The Big White Zephyr

Joseph Washington Bozeman_001Father’s Day!  The precious memories of my Father who was a godly man, who met all my needs and most of my wants.   He made it easier for me to have faith in God.

A Special tribute to my father!

The Big White Zephyr

White ZephyrOne of my favorite memories was riding the Big White Zephyr back and forth to college. My daddy was a conductor for the Burlington Rock Island Railroad, and I had a pass to ride the train home each week end. It was a new adventure for a inexperienced  young lady! Conductor

Shortly after boarding the train each week, a tall porter would come through the cars bellowing out, “Dinner is now served in the dinning car to the r-e-a-r! That’s when I would bounce through the cars, stepping cautiously as I entered each new car until I found myself in the dinning car at the rear of the train.  Dining Car

Since my daddy was the conductor, the porter knew me, and  would always seat me at a special window table, covered with a crisp damask white linen table cloth, where he served me coffee from an individual silver two-cup pot.  The silver pot of coffee cost me a whole twenty-five cents. Oh, what memories!  I could look out at the beautiful scenery as we whizzed by the country side from the small rural town of Teague to the Houston depot.

Because of my previous train rides, it was so easy for me to visualize Sarah Jane’s first train ride from Philadelphia to New York City. As she and her family pulled into the busy New York train station early in the morning, she peered out of the window to find a crowd of people.  The whistle blew with a long, piercing shriek as the great monstrous train came to a grinding halt.  Finally! New York City! Then the excitement began. Sara Jane could hardly wait to see the once in a lifetime parade!

The parade was like no other.  Flags flying, colorful costumes, and bands marching while a 21-gun salute ushered in the President of the Unites States,   the New York Governor, and other dignitaries. As the band played both the U. S. National and French National anthems, Lady Liberty held her torch high welcoming people from near and afar.

After hearing the story of the torch that Lady Liberty held in her hand, Sarah Jane learned that God had given her a torch of her own and she made a conscious decision to let her light shine for all the world to see.

Memories! I shall never forget how excited I was the first time that I visited New York City and sailed around the harbor to Ellis Island. There stood Lady Liberty lifting high her torch to the sky. This magnificent scene reminded me of my childhood when Mother got me all dressed up to play the part of the Statue of Liberty during a third grade history play.
